The charges against Muhyiddin stem from comments made on August 14 during a state election campaign for his conservative Perikatan Nasional alliance. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.
Malaysian media reported that Muhyiddin questioned why then-King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah did not appoint him as prime minister after the November 2022 elections, claiming he had the necessary support from lawmakers to form a government. Instead, the king appointed Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister following the closely contested election.
Malaysia's unique rotational monarchy involves the sultans of the nine states on the peninsula taking turns serving as the country’s king for a five-year term.
