Memorials and protests over the fate of captives mark the first anniversary of the attack, while fighting persists in Gaza and Lebanon.
Israel is marking the first anniversary of a deadly Hamas-led attack on its territory, which was followed by ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza. President Isaac Herzog began the day with a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m. at Kibbutz Reim, where 364 people were killed at the Nova music festival during the attack.
Herzog called the assault "a scar on humanity" and urged global support for Israel. Memorials were held across the country to honor the 1,139 Israelis killed and nearly 100 captives still held in Gaza. In addition, protests erupted outside Prime Minister Netanyahu's residence, demanding the return of the captives. Many protesters accuse the government of prioritizing political interests over securing their release, with some alleging Netanyahu is prolonging the conflict for personal gains.
Demonstrations by families of captives have become frequent over the past year, intensifying pressure on the government to reach a ceasefire and recover the hostages from Gaza.
