People inspect the wreckage of their tent homes after Israel dropped 900kg (2,000lb) bombs on sleeping displaced Palestinians in al-Mawasi, southern Gaza, on September 10, 2024 [Bashar Taleb/AFP].

I’m Tala Herzallah, 22, from northern Gaza.
Currently displaced and staying in al-Mawasi, this is what I witnessed on September 10, the day of the explosion:
- Photos: Israeli strike on Gaza’s al-Mawasi 'safe zone' kills at least 19
- At least 19 killed in Israeli strike on Gaza’s al-Mawasi 'safe zone'
- Israeli academia is directly complicit in the crimes of the state
The explosion struck just 200 meters (around 220 yards) away.
It felt like one of my worst nightmares, except it was real.
The sound, the immense destruction—it was clear these bombs were intended for massive buildings, not fragile tents made of the weakest materials imaginable.
