US claims it killed 37 ISIL and Hurras al-Din fighters in separate strikes in Syria.
The two strikes took place on September 16 and 24, according to CENTCOM.
29 Sep 2024The United States military says it has killed dozens of fighters from ISIL (ISIS) and the al-Qaeda-affiliated group Hurras al-Din in two separate strikes this month in Syria.
In a statement released Sunday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported a "large-scale airstrike" on a remote ISIL camp in central Syria on September 16, killing at least 28 fighters, including four senior leaders. CENTCOM stated that the strike would degrade ISIL’s capability to launch operations against US interests and its allies.
On September 24, another attack in northwestern Syria targeted Hurras al-Din, killing nine fighters, including senior leader Marwan Bassam ‘Abd-al-Ra’uf, who oversaw military operations. This was the second strike in two months against the group's leadership, following the killing of Abu-Abd al-Rahman al-Makki in August.
Hurras al-Din, linked to al-Qaeda, emerged in Syria in 2018. The US has around 900 troops in Syria, tasked with assisting local allies to prevent an ISIL resurgence. The Syrian government opposes the US presence and has demanded the withdrawal of American forces.
