Navdeep Singh clinched gold in the men’s F41 javelin throw at Paris 2024 with a record-breaking throw of 47.32m, marking India's first-ever medal in this category. His effort surpassed the previous Paralympic record of 47.13m set by China's Sun Pengxiang at Tokyo 2020.
Although Sadegh Beit Sayah of Iran briefly overtook Navdeep with a 47.64m throw, he was disqualified for unsporting conduct, securing Navdeep’s victory.
"I didn't expect to throw that far," Navdeep admitted, crediting his coach's encouragement after a foul on his first attempt. He consistently surpassed 45m in his other throws, showing optimism for future performances.
Sun Pengxiang, the reigning champion, earned silver with a 44.72m throw, while Iraq’s Wildan Nukhailawi took bronze with 40.46m.
Navdeep's journey to the top spot followed two fourth-place finishes at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and the 2022 Asian Para Games. He also claimed bronze earlier this year at the World Para Athletics.
Reflecting on his win, Navdeep expressed, "This medal holds great significance in my life. After years of hard work, I've finally reached the Paralympic podium."
India now has 29 medals at Paris 2024, including 17 in para athletics. In other javelin events, Sumit Antil secured gold in the F64 class, while Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze, respectively, in the F46 class.
