Israeli forces have fatally shot an American-Turkish activist during a demonstration in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa and a hospital official.

Twenty-six-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was participating in a protest against illegal Israeli settlements on Mount Sbeih in Beita, south of Nablus, when she was shot on Friday.

Fouad Nafaa, head of Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, told Reuters that Eygi arrived in critical condition with a severe head injury. “We attempted a resuscitation operation, but unfortunately, she passed away,” he said.

Eygi was shot when Israeli forces used live ammunition, stun grenades, and tear gas against protesters, Wafa reported, citing local sources.

Witness Jonathan Pollak told Al Jazeera that he found Eygi “lying on the ground beneath an olive grove, bleeding to death.” He attempted to stop the bleeding and checked her pulse, which was very weak, before calling an ambulance to evacuate her.

Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas announced that "all legal measures" would be pursued with the International Criminal Court following Eygi’s killing. He also called on President Biden to halt support to Israel, criticizing its actions against hospitals and civilians, including American nationals.

The Israeli military stated that its forces “responded with fire toward a main instigator of violent activity who hurled rocks at the forces.” It added that it was investigating reports of a foreign national being killed as a result of the shooting.
