**Haiti Establishes Council to Prepare for First Elections Since 2016**

 The country is entrenched in political turmoil, prompting the deployment of international peacekeepers to help restore stability.

Haiti’s government has established a provisional electoral council to prepare for its first general elections since 2016. The council, composed of representatives from farmers, journalists, human rights activists, and the Vodou community, is responsible for creating the legal framework and organizing the elections, scheduled to be held by 2026.

The council, announced on Wednesday, consists of seven members, according to the prime minister's office. Two seats remain vacant, designated for representatives of human rights and women’s rights groups, with appointments expected soon.

Haiti’s political instability worsened after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, leaving the country without a president since then.
