Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi will arrive in Ankara on Wednesday for his first official visit to Turkey since taking office in 2014. During the trip, el-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will co-chair a council and address key regional issues, including the conflict in Gaza and recent West Bank raids.

This visit follows Erdogan’s trip to Cairo in February, marking significant progress in mending diplomatic relations between the two countries after nearly a decade of tension. In March 2023, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu held talks in Ankara, signaling moves toward restoring full diplomatic ties, with the potential appointment of ambassadors on the horizon.

Relations between Egypt and Turkey had deteriorated after the 2013 coup that removed former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
