Giants Reissue Ray Flaherty's No. 1 for Malik Nabers,

The New York Giants have announced that they are unretiring the No. 1 jersey for rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers. The team confirmed the decision on Wednesday.

Nabers, the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, received approval from the family of the late Ray Flaherty to wear the number.

At LSU, Nabers wore No. 8, which is currently worn by quarterback Daniel Jones. He previously wore No. 9 this spring and summer, but that number is reserved for veteran kicker Graham Gano.

The No. 1 jersey was the first number ever retired in professional football history.

"Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants," Nabers said in a statement. "I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. Can't wait for the season to start."

Ray Flaherty, who played as an end, joined the Giants in 1929. After a stint as the Gonzaga basketball coach, he returned to the Giants from 1931 to 1935. Flaherty later became a professional football coach and is credited with innovations such as the behind-the-line screen pass and the two-platoon substitution system..

Flaherty was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976.

Since joining the team, Nabers' jersey number has been a subject of considerable discussion. He was initially looking for a single-digit number before ultimately choosing No. 1.

SHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders have added another potential target for quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Veteran receiver Noah Brown, who was released by the Houston Texans just a day earlier, signed with the Commanders on Wednesday, according to a source cited by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Brown is coming off his most productive seasons, including a standout year with Houston last season where he caught 33 passes for 567 yards and two touchdowns. Much of his production came in a two-game stretch where he recorded 13 catches for 325 yards and one touchdown.

Despite his productive season, Brown missed seven games due to injuries to his groin and back, and was later placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury after a playoff win over Cleveland.

In 2022, Brown caught 43 passes during his final season with Dallas. This offseason, he re-signed with the Texans on a one-year deal with $3 million guaranteed but struggled with lower body and shoulder injuries during training camp.

Washington had an open roster spot following the trade of defensive tackle John Ridgeway and a 2025 seventh-round pick to New Orleans in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round selection. The Commanders also traded receiver Jahan Dotson earlier this month.

With Terry McLaurin, a former Ohio State teammate of Brown, leading the receiving corps, Washington has multiple veterans including Olamide Zaccheaus, Jamison Crowder, and Byron Pringle. However, none of these players caught more than 16 passes last season. The Commanders also drafted Luke McCaffrey in the third round.
