No justification for ICC arrest warrant delay: Lawyer
More than four months have passed since ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan announced plans to seek arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and senior Hamas leaders. Yet, the court's pre-trial chamber has not approved the requests.
"This delay contrasts sharply with how other chambers, like in Ukraine, issued warrants within weeks," said Triestino Mariniello, a law professor at Liverpool John Moores University and legal team member for Gaza victims at the ICC since 2020, in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Mariniello criticized the ICC's inaction, noting it has "failed to provide justice to Palestinian victims" and allowed political interference to stall the process. He suggested the delay might be linked to external pressures on the court but emphasized, "from a legal perspective, there is no justification."
