Israel's approach to both assaults bears an eerie similarity. The question is, will it work?
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the world "cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza." Despite this, many Israeli figures equate Hamas in Gaza with Hezbollah in Lebanon, emphasizing the threat to justify military action against both.
However, Hamas and Hezbollah are not the same. Hezbollah plays a significant role in Lebanon's political and military structure but does not control the presidency or parliament. Lebanon, unlike Gaza, is integrated into international governance and financial systems.
While both groups are seen as allies of Iran, their relationships with Tehran differ. Hezbollah is closely aligned with Iran’s regional goals, while Hamas, though it receives Iranian support, is more independent and has at times distanced itself from Iran.
Israel has accused both groups of using civilians as human shields, justifying strikes on homes and civilian areas. Thousands of Lebanese civilians have been displaced by Israeli strikes, mirroring the destruction in Gaza.
