Donald Trump has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not negotiating with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, arguing that even the "worst deal" would be preferable to the current level of devastation.
At a campaign rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, Trump stated that Ukraine would never be able to replace its "many dead people" and the towns and cities destroyed by the conflict.
"Those cities are gone," Trump said. "We continue to send billions to a man who refused to make a deal. Any deal he could have made would have been better than the situation we have now."
Trump lamented that Ukraine's destruction is so extensive that rebuilding would take centuries and require global financial resources. He suggested that even a flawed agreement would have been more beneficial than the ongoing destruction.
Trump also accused Zelenskyy of disparaging him, referencing an interview in which Zelenskyy questioned Trump's ability to resolve the war. Additionally, Zelenskyy had labeled Trump’s running mate JD Vance as “too radical” over Vance's comments about potentially ceding land for a ceasefire.
Trump's remarks, his most direct criticism of Zelenskyy to date, came shortly after Zelenskyy addressed the UN General Assembly, urging for a "real, just peace" rather than a temporary halt in hostilities.
Despite his claims that he could end the war quickly, Trump has yet to detail his proposed solution. He recently mentioned having a "very exacting plan" but withheld specifics until it could be implemented.
