Frances Tiafoe is aiming for his second US Open semi-final as he faces Grigor Dimitrov in a battle for a spot in the final four.

Two years after his deepest run at a Grand Slam on home soil, Tiafoe has once again impressed on the New York hard courts. He survived a five-set thriller against close friend Ben Shelton and defeated Alexei Popyrin, who had earlier ousted Novak Djokovic, to reach the quarterfinals. It has been 21 years since an American man, Andy Roddick, last won at Flushing Meadows, and Tiafoe is determined to break that drought.

However, standing in his way is the experienced Grigor Dimitrov, who has been in excellent form over the past year. The Bulgarian has climbed back into the world’s top ten, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Miami Open in 2024. Dimitrov also holds a head-to-head advantage, having won three of their four previous encounters. In a week of unusually late starts, Tiafoe and Dimitrov began their match just before 9 PM. Tiafoe won the first set 6-3, lost a tense second-set tiebreak 7-6, and then secured the third set 6-3.

In the third set, both players have committed eight unforced errors, but Dimitrov has made twice as many forced errors, which may explain why he is trailing. Tiafoe is up 5-3 in the third set after Dimitrov edged him out in a second-set tiebreak. Despite Dimitrov hitting five winners to Tiafoe’s one in this set, the American looks poised to clinch the third.
